I have a confession: I LOVE the winter season. Anyone who sits and has tea with me in the winter time knows this about me. 

How come? 

Well, yes, I do love the lights and the advent calendars, the gathering together with loved ones, the crafting away in the kitchen with my daughter, making salves, and teas, and other gift-y potions for friends and family. 

There is however…this other love.

The love of…the hush.

You know?

The invitation to slow down…to stop even. To settle in and simply gaze at the fireplace while it blazes. To listen. Tune in.

This meets such a primordial, deep need in me.

It can be so tempting in contemporary culture to power through, or even ramp up our game, as we prepare for the holidays, visits and celebrations, and the intensity of commerce that comes with this time. 

And there can certainly be joy in that, there can be excitement in the preparing and the making and the doing, the visiting and connecting to what makes us “merry and bright”…historically after all we are needing to remind ourselves that…in the midst of the cold dark days..the light will return.

But here’s the thing: if that is ALL we do…if we don’t ALSO tune in to the DARKNESS itself, we are missing the wisdom and true potency of this time.
